Even though this is the ‘original’ volcano it is quite unusual, because the volcanic eruptions have been happening in a north-moving trend instead of directly on top of each other. The oldest part of the island is an infilled caldera, Caldera del Piano, it formed 100 ka. It is cut into by the younger Caldera della Fossa (24-15 ka). The caldera sank below the waves when it formed, and subsequent eruptions have carpeted its floor but its still ¼ below the sea. La Fossa cone, the source of eruptions since Classical times, sits inside the caldera. Vulcanello first emerged in 183 BC and was joined to the island of Vulcano in 1530. The island is only 500m high but rises from a 1000m deep seabed. The island was also reputed to be the home of Vulcan, the Roman God of war, fire & metalworking.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://geoworldtraveldiaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/itygwtr22-194.jpg</image:loc><image:title>itygwtr22-194</image:title><image:caption>Stromboli erupting at night</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://geoworldtraveldiaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/itygwtr22-193.jpg</image:loc><image:title>itygwtr22-193</image:title><image:caption>Stromboli volcano–the most ‘diligent’ volcano on earth that has probably been continuously erupting for the last 5,000 years. Due to these continuous eruptions, Stromboli is possibly the best place in the world to go to be able to get a chance to see lava. It lends its name to the‘Strombolian’ type eruption, but it is a stratovolcano not the type of volcano typically produced by Strombolian eruptions. However, for the last 2,500-5000 years, Strombolian eruptions have been its most typical eruption.</image:caption></image:image><image:image><image:loc>https://geoworldtraveldiaries.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/itygwtr22-191.jpg</image:loc><image:title>itygwtr22-191</image:title><image:caption>The active vents are located at the head of Sciara del Fuoco, a horseshoe shaped scarp that formed 5,000 years ago due to a series of slope failures.
